Collages of a disappeared world image 

Martin Voorbij calls his work ´Reframe and Revitalize´. The use of this imperative form, that he chooses to represent his visual idea, is instantly softened by its result, which produces a big smile onto my face. The artist offers us delightful new work, that causes a strong desire to observe more closely, as there is so much to be seen. Observing it from a short distance, Voorbij´s art disperses an utterly inviting atmosphere, due to its use of warm colours, which remind us of a time when artists used to blend their own paints, and needed only few tones to picture the visual affluence of a landscape. 

While taking a closer look, Voorbij´s collages invite one to take in the many details he clipped from discarded paintings, and ´revitalized´ into a new world. He displays a kaleidoscopic world, filled with buildings, skies, landscapes and perspectives, that are so clearly deviated from one another, that is almost impossible to get lost in this seemingly convincing illusion. 

As soon as observation evolves into reflection, Voorbij´s art raises a lot of questions, offering us a great opportunity to gain new perspectives on this form of art. 
Are we dealing with art vandalism here, in which the artist gets to decide what becomes of hundreds of art works that are sold at thrift stores and flea markets? 
Art works that, either justly or unjustly, have not been labelled as either historical or artistically valuable; forgotten, abandoned and carelessly discarded. Can Voorbij simply appoint himself creator of these regained images? 


The word ´revitalizing´ however, has a positive connotation as Voorbij demonstrates by transforming parts of unloved painting into new, ostensibly attractive world images. Are these new depictions a truly attractive alternative? 
Recognition, nostalgia and melancholy happen to evolve into estrangement, for the artist´s images are not a literal reflection of an existing era. The pictured landscapes, cities, and community are basically scattered sheets of canvas, meticulously glued together; they solely lack cohesion. Their chaos is not restrained by any well-considered angles.    
The degree of significance of Martin Voorbij´s work clearly cannot be described in just a few sentences. He provides us with a positive impression of ´what was´, but leaves us startled as to what we should do with this in the future. The past should not be an impediment for the future ahead of us.

Collages van een verdwenen wereldbeeld 

Hij noemt zijn werk ‘Herkader en Revitaliseer’. De gebiedende wijs waarmee hij zijn visuele idee presenteert, wordt in eerste instantie verzacht door het resultaat, dat bij mij een grote glimlach op mijn gezicht tovert. Heerlijk werk met een grote aanzuigende werking om intens te kijken, er is zoveel te zien. Van een afstand is de sfeer uitnodigend, door de warme tinten die doen denken aan de tijd waarin kunstenaars zelf hun kleuren mengden en slechts enkele tonen nodig hadden om de visuele rijkdom van het landschap voor het oog te ontsluiten. 

Dichtbij begint het kijken naar de grote hoeveelheid details die hij uit oude, kapotte en ontheemde schilderijen heeft geknipt en ‘gerevitaliseerd’ in een nieuwe wereld. 
Hij toont een caleidoscopische wereld met bouwwerken, luchten, landschappen en perspectieven, die ten opzichte van elkaar zo afwijkend zijn, zodat het onmogelijk is om als kijker in een voor het oog overtuigende illusie te verdwalen. 

Als kijken overgaat in reflectie, dan worden veel vragen opgeroepen en blijkt er een zee aan ruimte voor nieuwe inzichten. 
Hebben we hier te maken met kunstvandalisme, waarbij hij zelf kan bepalen wat hij doet met de honderden werken die voor een paar euro’s te koop zijn in kringloopwinkels en rommelmarkten? Die terecht of onterecht niet bestempeld zijn als historisch of kunstzinnig waardevol; vergeten, ontheemd en als waardeloos achtergelaten. Kan hij zich zondermeer de eigenaar noemen van de hernomen beelden? 

Revitaliseren heeft een positieve connotatie en dat laat de kunstenaar zien door met delen van oude afgedankte werken een nieuwe ogenschijnlijk aantrekkelijke wereld op te roepen. Maar zijn deze werelden ook een nieuw aantrekkelijk alternatief? Herkenning, nostalgie, melancholie gaan over in vervreemding, want deze beelden zijn geen letterlijke weerspiegeling van een passend tijdsbeeld. De landschappen, steden en samenleving van toen zijn slechts losse vellen, met grote zorg in een compositie geplakt waarin echter elke samenhang ontbreekt. De chaos wordt niet bedwongen met een enkel gezichtspunt. 
De betekenislaag die hieruit voortkomt is niet in een paar zinnen te beschrijven. De kunstenaar biedt een positieve indruk ten opzichte van ‘wat was’, maar laat open wat we daar nu en in de toekomst mee moeten doen. Het verleden moet geen belemmering zijn voor de toekomst.

Martin Voorbij

Martin was active musician and performing poet. After several year of music therapy he Initiated one local (Inkijkmuseum) and one global initiative (Show Your Hope) which both function for over 15 years now. These initiatives brought him to more then 40 countries, cooperation with hundreds of artists and as storyteller and presentor of contemporary art he performed countless times.
Since 2017 he is making visual arts out of recycled materials.
